Lourens Prinsloo Custom Knives

Lourens Prinsloo Custom Knives

About Lourens Prinsloo

Lourens made his first knife in 1996, shortly after attending a knife making course with Owen Wood and became a member of the Knifemakers’ Guild of Southern Africa since 1998.

Prior to his retirement in 2016, Lourens taught engineering, graphic design, wood-work and metalwork which assisted him with the diversity and challenges that exist in creating collector’s items with exotic appeal.

His main focus is making gentleman’s folding knives, specifically liner locks. Lourens uses a variety of steels including his own trademark mosaic damascus, which he forges himself at his home in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Selecting suitable handle material is always a challenge as that is always something new to discover. Materials include carbon fiber, mammoth ivory, mammoth tooth, rare burl wood, and giraffe bone to name a few.

The mosaic damascus steel that Lourens forges has won numerous awards over the years at the KGSA Guild shows (including: Best Gentleman’s Folder, Best Art folder, Points of Interest and Finest Own Damascus).

Lourens regularly attends the New York Custom Knife Show, Durban Easter Knife Show, FXI Paris as well as the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa Shows.
